It is Mr. Fremstad’s definitions that are strained.

Absolutely while we are seeking to shrink government to a size that we can drown it in the bathtub, we should look at other the other areas os spending or at tax breaks. But that does nto make those fit the traditional definition of welfare.

A tax break may be a bad idea – but it is a reduction in the amount you pay the government, not a benefit you get from the government.

We are entitled to government at the least possible cost to citizens.

Mr. Fremstad’s editorial make the same implicit common left wing nut argument that all wealth belongs to government – whatever you are left to keep is a privilege. It is not your property that you have earned. Essentially that any reduction in the taxes that anyone pays short of 100% is a gift from government a benefit indistinguishable from charity.
