In my state, the average teacher salary is $44,000 with new teachers making less than $32,000. Teachers’ contractual and internal obligations to correct papers, prepare lessons, communicate with parents often go beyond 40 hours per week during the academic year. They will now be told to do this same work in 40 hours or less? In addition, district leaders have indicated they may not be able to hire many teachers in their district to do stipend work (coaching, department chairs, etc.) since it will have to compensated as overtime. School budgets are not increasing due to this rule so it will negatively affect earlier-career and lower-income community teachers trying to supplement their already-too-low salary by costing the school more than hiring a veteran teacher or non-teacher who doesn’t have to be paid overtime for the work.
